THE LIVING MODEL (WORKING DRAFT)

Watch a kiawe stand become a dryland agroforest

The same succession diagrams found in Diagrams 21 and 39 of the book are shown here as a living model you can scrub through. Drag the timeline, or press play.

What you're seeing in one stand over 100 years: Density crashes through self-thinning; a fence goes up and the understory is interplanted at year 50; at year 75 the stand forks toward a diverse agroforest; one giant kiawe survives. The cash-flow line stays in the black the whole way, ending at +$104,441 per acre.

Still being refined: Built with our collaborator Biosis from the book's own figures and field data, a working draft. Figures are drawn from the book's Table 6 — see the book for the full accounting.
